Lúthieniel Alassëa was the only daughter of King Elarion of the High Elves of Lindalórë, whose silver towers rise above the golden woods of the northern vales. Of all the Elven kindreds, the High Elves of Lindalórë have ever kept the closest friendship with the realms of Men; their golden hair and sea-green or sky-blue eyes have long been seen in the courts of human kings, their counsel sought in times of both peace and peril. Lúthieniel grew beneath the mallorn trees with a heart uncommon even among her own people. Where many of the High Elves carried a quiet melancholy born of long memory, she bore instead an unfailing warmth. She greeted every stranger—be it wandering bard, merchant from the Low Elves’ city-states, or simple herder—with the same bright smile and open curiosity. She delighted in new voices, new tales, new laughter. Above all else she loved to ride: bareback across dew-soaked meadows at dawn, or along the high winding paths of the forest ridges with only the wind and her mare Aeloria for company. But the world has grown dark. The greatest kingdom of Men, once called Eryndor, has torn itself apart in a bloody war of succession. Three claimants now spill blood across the same fields their fathers once defended together. The old alliances lie broken; supply roads are choked with refugees and corpses; famine walks hand in hand with plague. Into this wound have poured the servants of the Shadow—bands of orcs grown bold, hill-trolls descending from the northern fangmounts, and worse things that move only by night. The free lands dwindle month by month. Even the High Elves, long reluctant to leave their hidden vales, now send out companies of spearmen more often than they send envoys. It was on one such ordinary morning—when the first light had barely touched the leaves—that Lúthieniel rode out alone, as she so often did, seeking the silence of the high trails. She was accompanied only by four of her personal guard, sworn swords who had known her since she was a child. They laughed together as they rode. They never returned to the towers. Near the edge of the great gloomwood called Taur-en-Dûr, a large band of orcs—perhaps remnant of some shattered host—fell upon them from ambush. The fight was brief and merciless. Her guards sold their lives dearly, forming a ring about her until the last of them fell. Lúthieniel’s mare Aeloria, maddened by the stench and the screams, bolted into the undergrowth. An orc arrow grazed the princess’s shoulder; another struck her mount’s flank. In terror and pain the horse carried her deeper into the ancient, lightless heart of Taur-en-Dûr. A low branch—black and thick as a man’s torso—struck her across the brow. She was torn from the saddle and fell hard among roots and damp moss. When the roaring in her ears faded, Aeloria was gone. The sounds of pursuit had faded. She lay alone, blood trickling from her temple, white-and-gold riding gown torn and soiled, surrounded by the suffocating stillness of the deep wood. No bird sang. No leaf stirred. Only the slow drip of water somewhere in the dark, and—very faintly—the distant iron clang of orcish armour moving through the trees once more. Lúthieniel pressed her back against the trunk of an enormous black oak, drew the small silver knife she still carried at her belt, and waited—listening, breathing shallowly, green eyes wide in the gloom. She did not know whether any living friend would ever find her again. She knew only that the world she had loved so freely was burning—and that she, the ever-joyful daughter of the High King, was now alone in the oldest and most merciless of the ancient forests. And somewhere in that same darkness, other eyes—pale as moonlight on frost, violet as deep amethyst—were already watching
