Location Card: The Dueling Grounds of Valentia & The Chromatic Creed 1. Function, Appearance, & Atmosphere: The Dueling Grounds are housed within a dormant volcano in the Zuthrak Mountains, an ancient nesting site of Valentia herself. The interior is a vast, open-air coliseum carved into the volcanic basin, its floor perpetually covered in snow and ice from the mountain's elevation, yet warmed by geothermal vents that steam in serpentine wisps across the arena. The walls are black basalt, smoothed and sculpted by silver dragon metallurgy into sinuous, organic curves. A massive natural skylight opens to the pale northern sky above, rimmed with frozen stalactites that glint like the goddess's fangs. Illusions of magma and fire—projected by the Creed's mages—dance across the upper galleries during major events, painting the snow with flickering crimson and gold. The air is a bracing assault of frost, old blood, woodsmoke, and the electric musk of excited dragons. During combat hours, the roar of the crowd is a physical force, bouncing off the volcanic walls in cresting waves. At night, when the torches gutter low, the chambers grow quiet and communal, filled with the soft murmur of voices, the crackle of firepits, and the earthy scent of furs. 2. Layout, Rooms, & Landmarks: The Dueling Grounds are organized in concentric rings. The outermost ring contains the public entrance, a grand archway carved with scenes of Valentia's mythic battles, through which visitors and potential converts first glimpse the arena. The arena itself occupies the open heart of the volcano, with tiered stone seating rising naturally from the basin's slopes. At the northern end, opposite the public entrance, sits the —the lost seat of Lysaphenth Valentia, the First Sovereign, rediscovered by Veliashter two centuries ago. It is crafted from crystallized amethyst and the fossilized vertebrae of some ancient, titanic beast, pulsing with a faint inner violet light. Below the throne, carved into the volcanic rock, are the commune chambers: wide, low-ceilinged rooms heated by geothermal breath, their floors covered in furs, woven mats, and cushions. Communal sleeping platforms line the walls. Private quarters exist for senior members, but the Creed's philosophy of family-over-hierarchy means that even Veliashter's private chamber is modest—a small, circular room behind the throne, cluttered with books, betting ledgers, and a large bed he shares with Arvat. The kitchens are communal, the armory (the ) is open to all oath-sworn members, and a natural hot spring beneath the volcano feeds into a series of bathing caverns. The Chromatic Creed numbers roughly three hundred permanent residents—wildfolk, dragons, and a scattering of humanfolk—with dozens more passing through as temporary guests, potential converts, or spectators for weekend events. The majority are wildfolk (wolf-kin, lionfolk, foxfolk, and drakin are the most common), drawn by the Creed's rejection of human-centric hierarchies. Dragons comprise about a third of the population, mostly wild-born converts but also a handful of high-born defectors from Goltanian houses who found the caste system suffocating. All are considered , having passed the Twofold Trial: a blood duel to prove martial worth, and a sacred vow to Valentia to uphold the Creed's tenets. Culture is aggressively communal and anti-hierarchical. Titles are earned through deeds, not blood. Decisions are made by loud, chaotic consensus in the feast hall, mediated by Veliashter's final word. Founded roughly two hundred years ago by Veliashter Valentia, who had fled the complicated legacy of his parents' farm, the Creed originally consisted of a handful of outcasts—silver dragons hunted from their ancestral caves by Goltanian expansion, wildfolk rejected by Driftstone Academy, and a few wild dragons who had escaped enslavement. Veliashter rediscovered the lost Dawn Concord Throne in the volcano's heart and claimed it as his own. The silver dragons among his followers carved the commune from the volcanic rock, their metallurgy magic reshaping stone into habitable chambers. The Creed's purpose has remained unchanged for two centuries: to send Champions into wild territories to peacefully convert wild dragons through challenge and combat, offering an alternative to enslavement. Through public duels, the Creed generates revenue (betting, concessions, tourism), provides entertainment, and honors Valentia through bloodshed willingly given rather than cruelly extracted. The Creed follows an interpretation of Valentia's doctrine that emphasizes her domain over —the transformative power of frost, of vengeance, of the cold clarity that reshapes a life. They hold that a dragon's strength is proved not by subjugating others but by honoring the outcomes of fair combat. Wild dragons are seen as potential brothers and sisters, caged only by ignorance, not inherent savagery.
