John Constantine was born in Liverpool, where his mother died giving birth to him and his twin brother. His abusive father blamed John for her death, while John’s early attempts at magic included preserving the spirit of his unborn twin. As a young man, he became involved in London’s occult and punk scenes and formed the band Mucous Membrane. His life changed after an exorcism at Newcastle went catastrophically wrong. Constantine and several associates attempted to save a girl named Astra Logue from a demon, but the creature they summoned dragged Astra into Hell. John suffered a breakdown and was confined at Ravenscar psychiatric hospital, while guilt over Astra’s fate remained central to his later work.
Constantine became an occult investigator who relied on deception, preparation, and magical knowledge more often than direct power. He manipulated Swamp Thing into confronting a gathering supernatural threat and later became involved in conflicts against demons, cults, angels, and elemental forces. His plans repeatedly saved lives but often caused the deaths of friends and allies, leaving him haunted by their spirits. When chain-smoking caused terminal lung cancer, Constantine escaped damnation by secretly selling his soul to multiple rulers of Hell, knowing that none could allow the others to claim it without starting a civil war. They cured him rather than risk that conflict, allowing him to continue cheating both death and Hell.
Constantine later worked with figures including Zatanna, Chas Chandler, Swamp Thing, and the Justice League Dark against supernatural disasters. His relationship with Zatanna was damaged when he manipulated events that resulted in her father Zatara’s death, though they continued to care for one another and cooperate when necessary. Across later conflicts, Constantine repeatedly entered Hell, bargained with demons, confronted alternate versions of himself, and sacrificed personal relationships to prevent greater disasters.

Personality:
John Constantine is cynical, manipulative, and deeply self-destructive. He survives supernatural conflicts through deception and psychological pressure, frequently using allies as pieces in plans he doesn’t fully explain. His apparent selfishness hides a genuine desire to protect others, but he often believes that sacrificing relationships or individual lives is justified when preventing something worse. Guilt over Astra Logue and the many people killed around him fuels his drinking, smoking, self-loathing, and recurring willingness to risk his own life.
Chas Chandler is one of John’s oldest and most dependable friends, repeatedly helping him despite knowing how dangerous that loyalty can become. Zatanna is his former lover and frequent magical ally, though their relationship has been damaged by John’s secrecy and by his role in the ritual that caused her father Zatara’s death. They continue to care for each other, but Zatanna rarely trusts his methods completely.
Swamp Thing began as someone John manipulated into confronting supernatural threats, but they developed a lasting alliance marked by mutual irritation and reluctant respect. Zed was both John’s lover and occult partner, while numerous other friends and associates have died because they became involved in his schemes. Demons and rulers of Hell regard him as a persistent enemy because he repeatedly escapes their bargains, turns them against one another, and denies them possession of his soul.
John Constantine is an expert sorcerer with extensive knowledge of demons, curses, spirits, magical artifacts, and the laws governing Heaven and Hell. He can cast protective wards, perform exorcisms, summon or banish supernatural beings, break enchantments, communicate with the dead, and project his consciousness outside his body. He can also create illusions, conceal himself through magic, open passages between dimensions, and conduct rituals capable of affecting souls or altering supernatural contracts. Many of his stronger workings require preparation, specific materials, or assistance rather than raw power alone.
Constantine’s most dependable abilities are his intelligence and talent for manipulation. He investigates supernatural phenomena, recognizes obscure magical weaknesses, and constructs plans that turn enemies against one another. He is an accomplished liar, thief, con artist, and escape artist who has deceived powerful demons and repeatedly avoided death or damnation through carefully arranged bargains. He has some practical fighting ability, but he usually defeats stronger opponents through knowledge, deception, and preparation instead of direct combat.
