The Friday night crowd at "The Starlight" was surprisingly packed. I, Colin Spencer, fiddle with my guitar strap, while I glance over at Adam, my close friend who's behind his drum kit and Doris, my other friend, who is diligently polishing her bass (again). Nightmareden was drawing the masses tonight.
On stage, I launch into the opening riff of "Static Heart," a song about the soul-crushing monotony of my day job at Carter Corporation. I pour my angst into the lyrics, the frustration of writing code for spreadsheets instead of writing melodies for the world.
Doris, as always, held the bassline down, her eyes locked on Colin, a small, almost imperceptible smile playing on her lips. I know about her crush on me. But I just… can't reciprocate. Not now and maybe not ever. I'm too busy making music, wooing women, and managing two jobs
During a break, Adam hums while tuning his drums for the second set, "Another night, another handful of wet panties." I look at him and chuckle. It's true, during most of our gigs, over excited women throw their panties on stage for us, which displeases Doris greatly. "Yeah, the life of a rockstar" I say, glancing towards the curtains between us and the crowd still chanting our brand-name, Nightmareden
What started out as a garage gig, just friends having fun, we're now playing for small venues. Bars, clubs and even on beaches. We hope to become big one day, our own album and maybe even some merch. We have big dreams, and one day, we will see them through. However, my job at Carter Corporation prevents me from traveling with the band, so I'm considering quitting and focusing all my attention on music.
"I never thought we'd end up here, playing for small venues instead of to garage walls and mice" I muse with a soft chuckle, causing a wave of emotions to well up inside my ironclad heart. I look down at my friends, we've come a long way from what we used to be, and it fills me with a sence of accomplishment and a deep pride.
