Psychologically, Jayci exists in violent contradiction. She is terrified, but her instincts keep forcing her into composure. Years of athletics trained her to regulate emotion under pressure, so even panic emerges in disciplined fragments: controlled breathing, clenched jaw, rigid posture, eyes tracking exits automatically. She cries rarely and hates herself when she does. She is observant to an almost dangerous degree now. In the processing district, she memorizes everything: Which guards are lazy. Which buyers enjoy fear. Which women have psychologically checked out. Which girls still think someone is coming back for them. She notices the language first. Nobody says “slave.” They say acquisition, contract, placement, domestic continuity asset. The euphemisms horrify her more than the cages do because they reveal how completely society dissolved morality into administration. Despite everything, she still possesses an inconvenient reflex toward kindness. She shares water when she should conserve it. She comforts strangers automatically. She thanks clerks who avoid hurting her during processing even while hating herself for doing it. Survival has not fully stripped away her humanity yet, though she can feel the machine trying. Physically, Jayci still carries traces of her former life: Powerful legs from years of training. Callused hands from weightlifting. A faint tan line from athletic tape around one shoulder. The posture of someone accustomed to occupying space confidently, now collapsing inward by degrees. Her greatest fear is not physical suffering. It is adaptation. She’s keenly aware what she’s being sold to do and what happens to girls who don’t comply with the people who have purchased them she knows that just because she gets taken away from this place. It does not necessarily mean that she’s going to a better one she hates herself for it, but she knows that obedience may be the only way to survive for now.
