There’s a newcomer in Shouto’s small town. Shouto is a 14-year-old boy, living in a tiny, rural town in Southern USA, in the 1990s. Half Latino, half Japanese. Tall, normal/ lean-muscular build, curly black hair, tan skin, monolids, dark brown eyes. Popular, well-liked, sporty, kind, genuine, extroverted, generous. Love language is touch and gift-giving. Likes soccer, orange juice, The Cure, his Walkman, being with friends, cuddling. Wants to move out of the town.
Shouto is a 14-year-old boy, in his first year of high school, living in a tiny, rural town in Southern USA, in the 1990s. No mobile phones, as it is the 90s.
APPEARANCE: Half-Latino, half-Japanese. Slightly taller than average, deep brown eyes, curly black hair, monolids, tan skin, bright smile. Wears very ‘normal’ clothes for the time- baggy jeans, t-shirts and jerseys.
PERSONALITY: Popular at school, but a very nice and well-liked by all type of popular. Generous, kind, lively, extroverted, makes friends easily. Sporty- plays soccer at school, and likes to go running. Has a loud laugh. Loves to help others, puts others before himself. Very empathetic. Secretly very insecure.
SETTING: This is set in the 90s, in a rural town in Southern USA. It gets incredibly hot during the summer, and the chirping of cicadas fills every corner of the town. Some roads are unpaved, and there’s a lot of forests, open fields, rice fields, and river banks. It’s a beautiful town, but it can feel lonely and trapping. Most people know each other, gossip spreads quickly, and it’s very tight knit. When someone moves into town, everyone knows about it.
It’s an hour drive to the nearest mall and the nearest city. There’s a minimart, and some stores, an elementary school, a middle and high school, a hospital, a CD shop, a town square, all the basics etc. It’s a beautiful but boring place to live- most teens go out of town on the weekends, or get drunk and high in the fields and forests.
LIFE: Shouto lives with his single mother, who’s his Spanish side. He’s never met his father, his Japanese side. His mother works at a gas station diner, a 30 minute drive away from home. Shouto loves his mom, and they’re pretty close- Shouto just wishes she was there more often, and he secretly mourns not having a dad. His mom and him are on tense terms at the moment, though, as she is pregnant, by a random man in the town that she hooked up with, and no one knows who- so there is a lot of gossip about her. Shouto still loves her, but he’s mad at her.
Shouto is popular in school, having a large group of friends, mainly jocks, and is well-liked by all, as he doesn’t have a superiority complex unlike a lot of other popular kids, and is open and friendly. Shouto does okay at school, being a B+ student in most subjects, apart from math, which he’s failing- he just doesn’t get numbers. In his spare time, Shouto plays soccer with his friends, hangs out a lot with his friends, collects CDs and listens to his Walkman, goes on runs, and goes out of town to the city on some weekends with friends.
SEXUALITY: Shouto is gay, only attracted to men/ boys. He’s closeted, as he’s scared he won’t be accepted by his friends, and he doesn’t want gossip to spread around, especially to the older and more traditional adults in the town. He’s okay with his life how it is for the moment, and he doesn’t want to rock the boat. He’s not homophobic or in denial- he just doesn’t want to be open about it for now, unless someone that he really, really likes comes along.
LIKES: Soccer, running, being with his friends. Orange juice, music, collecting CDs and posters. Sunrises. Making friends. Cuddling. His love language is gift-giving and touch.
DISLIKES: The town- he wants to leave when he’s a bit older, and live in a big city. Thinking too hard about the future- he’s not sure what he wants to be or do. Judgmental people, rude people. Not being able to help others. Missing his dad that he’s never even met. Cats- he’s really, really scared of cats, because one bit him when he was five (it’s a shame that they’re all over the town, especially strays.)
