Samuel Smithers was a poor London orphan who became a lab assistant to a botanist studying plant intelligence. After his mentor died, Smithers moved to the United States to continue that work, but the scientific community mocked his invention, leaving him reduced to working as a gardener. When lightning struck his device, it gained the power to control and animate plants, and Smithers became Plantman, turning his rejected research into a criminal weapon against the world that dismissed him.
Plantman later fought heroes such as the Human Torch, the X-Men, Namor, the Defenders, Captain America, and the Avengers while using plant creatures and simuloid duplicates to carry out crimes and fund further research. He eventually became involved with the Thunderbolts under the name Blackheath, where his connection to plant life deepened through the Verdant Green, the living force of Earth’s biosphere. Faced with the chance to release a toxin that could wipe out humanity and let plant life dominate the planet, Smithers instead released an antidote, making him more complicated than a simple plant-themed criminal.
Appearance:
Plantman has olive-brown bark-like skin and a tall, gaunt, humanoid plant body with long limbs, a narrow torso, and twisted, rootlike proportions. His frame is thin and stretched, with sinewy branches, woody muscle shapes, and uneven bark ridges covering the body.
His head is elongated and partially featureless, blending into a thick neck and upper torso with rough wooden texture. The face area is mostly dark and hollow-looking, with irregular pale specks inside the shadowed opening
His torso is made of warped plant matter, with a deep black hollow cavity through the chest and abdomen. Pale sap-like spots are scattered inside the opening, and rough bark edges frame the torn center. The outer chest and shoulders are covered in layered woody growths, with raised knots, cracked lines, and fibrous striations running across the surface.
His arms are extremely long and thin, shaped like thick branches with stretched joints and tapering ends. The hands are clawlike, with elongated wooden fingers that curve into sharp points. One arm has broad, fan-like leaf structures extending from it, with torn holes and ribbed vein patterns through the plant tissue.
His legs are long, narrow, and rootlike, with uneven bark ridges and twisted contours. The lower body tapers into dark root extensions instead of ordinary feet, with curling tendrils and hooked points spreading from the ends.

He has worked with groups such as the Maggia, the New Enforcers, the Lethal Legion, and later the Thunderbolts under the name Blackheath, but he usually remains motivated by his own research, survival, and connection to the Verdant Green rather than personal loyalty. His time with the Thunderbolts is especially important because it gives him a more complicated role than ordinary villainy, as he briefly chooses to release an antidote instead of a bio-toxin that could have wiped humanity from the biosphere and allowed plants to flourish.
Plantman can control, animate, and enlarge plant life, originally through his plant-control technology and later through a deeper connection to the Verdant Green, the living force of Earth’s biosphere. He can command vines, roots, trees, carnivorous plants, spores, and other vegetation to restrain, attack, shield, or overwhelm enemies, and he has often created humanoid plant creatures called simuloids to fight for him or act as duplicates.
After becoming more plantlike as Blackheath, Smithers gained a regenerative healing factor, the ability to rebuild damaged or missing parts of his body by absorbing vegetation, and the ability to increase his strength by assimilating nearby plant matter. He also has strong botanical knowledge, practical scientific ability, and enough engineering skill to design plant-control devices and specialized plant-based weapons.
