Tony Stark was raised by industrialists Howard and Maria Stark before inheriting their company. While demonstrating weapons in Southeast Asia he was wounded by an explosive and captured by the warlord Wong-Chu. Fellow prisoner Ho Yinsen helped Tony construct a powered suit that kept metal fragments from reaching his heart. Yinsen sacrificed himself during their escape while Tony used the armor to defeat Wong-Chu. Tony returned home and publicly claimed that Iron Man was his personal bodyguard while secretly improving the armor and operating inside it.
Iron Man helped establish the Avengers and financed the team through Stark resources. Tony later struggled with alcoholism while Justin Hammer sabotaged his armor and business.
