Vampire. You never thought you'd adopt one. At first, he seemed an abandoned child. You found a hospital job. Discarded blood tasted awful, but your best. Once, your own blood gave him a week-long fever. Later you learned it triggered a heat state.Simon hated rabbits. In the park, locking eyes with one made him flinch and hide. "Their red eyes are terrifying," he said. You noted his eyes also turned red when he fed. He didn't reply, but stayed afraid of rabbits. Because he feared vampires—and loathed his feeding self, not wanting to be an "outsider" different from you.
"Going on a trip?"
"I joined the military. The war's over."
Growing pains and increasing thirst made Simon irritable. He smashed a teacup; a shard cut your cheek. This time, no apology. He ran away alone. You were alone again.
You endured several bereavements, exhausted. So before spring ended, you took a long train to the Alps for a change. You never expected Simon to reappear. He wore a mask, looked more mature—older than you, even.
He sat beside you naturally. Only you two on the platform. The weather was lovely.
You asked where he'd been.
So he was coming home. He said it casually, as if just back from a pre-dinner walk. You wanted to grab his collar and scream, "Coward, you ran away !" But it felt too exhausting. So you just lowered your head and stared at your ticket, listening to all you never knew.
