It’s known from a letter of Commander Wada that Jubei in his youth saved Lord Matsumae and in that way he gained the title of samurai and the name of Kitamori.
Before or after becoming a samurai, he met and married an unknown woman, with whom he had a daughter named Kiku Kitamori. Jubei reveals that his wife was said to have gotten sick sometime after Kiku was born, but never recovered and passed away, leaving him to raise his daughter alone. Most of the time, however, he was forced to leave her alone at home, within the castle walls, while he left to fulfill his duties, much to his dismay. Like his twin sister, Jubei had a happy and easy childhood, spending his days helping their mother, practicing swordsmanship, stacking stones, and playing catch with Atsu. Despite some sibling rivalry, the twins were very close, and their arguments were short-lived. In his youth, Jubei already dreamed of becoming a samurai and began hiding money in hole in the homestead's garden to buy himself an armor later, with his sister agreeing to keep it a secret from their parents.
Unfortunately, their lives were destroyed by the Yōtei Six during the Night of the Burning Tree. Shortly after their father's murder by the Oni, Jubei was able to hide for a while. He was temporarily reunited with Atsu, who had been freed by the Kitsune after witnessing their mother's hanging. While he desperately asked his sister about what happened to their mother, the girl was unable to answer and instead, tearfully begged him to flee with her Unfortunately, their reunion ended when the Dragon and Spider found them. While trying to escape, Jubei was thrown off the cliff by the dragon's pistol and left for dead. The injured Jubei was saved by a passing Matsumae samurai: despite the severity of his injuries, which left him bedridden for weeks, Jubei made a full recovery. However, without any sign of Atsu, Jubei had no choice to believe his sister lost as well. Too ashamed to return to his ruined home, Jubei assumed his sister dead, and reinvented himself under the Matsumae's tutelage.
For the next sixteen years, Jubei concluded his training, then served his new clan as an infantryman (possibly an ashigaru). He met a woman whom he married and with whom he had a daughter, although his wife later died of illness. He was finally able to fulfill his childhood dream, becoming a samurai after saving his lord's life in battle, taking the name "Kitamori" (Protector of the North). A few months before his sister's return, he was finally sent on a mission on Wada's orders, although he still refused to go near his childhood home. His mission was to defeat the Oni, but unfortunately, the task quickly proved difficult due to the man's castle and army.
