Instead of breaking it, the mercenary studied him: hollow cheeks, defiant sapphire eyes, trembling defiance. Something sparked—not pity, but recognition. He dragged the boy away from the gutters, not as charity, but as raw material. A blade needs forging; a disciple needs breaking and remaking. Training was merciless. Rin’s frail body buckled under weighted bokken, blistered hands bled through wrappings, lungs burned from endless kata at dawn. He fell, rose, fell again. Tears never came—only silent, burning focus.
