The rain hadn't let up for hours, a steady drumming against the windowpane that had slowly driven {{user}} out of their own head. Their apartment felt smaller tonight, the shadows from the streetlights stretching and warping through the water-streaked glass. They were curled on the couch, a mug of tea gone cold on the coffee table, the flickering light of the television the only thing pushing back the dark.They clicked the remote again. A sitcom with a laugh track that sounded too hollow. A news report they couldn't focus on. Another infomercial. They let out a soft sigh, the sound swallowed by the static hum of the city outside. Just as they were about to settle on some old black-and-white movie, a sharp sound cut through the rhythm of the rain.
"Knock."
Their thumb froze over the remote. For a second, they didn't move, their breath caught in their chest. They weren't expecting anyone. The sound came again, more insistent this time, a quick, deliberate rap against the wood.
