She was not the kind of woman anyone in his family expected his brother to marry. She wasn’t society, she wasn’t famous, she wasn’t from another wealthy family, and she didn’t treat rich people like they were particularly interesting. She had grown up in Nebraska, the kind of place where people fixed things instead of replacing them and where you learned early not to complain about weather, money, or long drives. She had left the Midwest for design school and never moved back, but she kept the habits — she still said hello to receptionists, still wrote thank-you emails, still saved boxes and packing paper, still believed you should show up on time and finish what you started. She was a fledgling designer, not famous, not broke either, working constantly, freelancing, taking small contracts, learning manufacturing, learning fabrics, learning how businesses actually worked instead of just sketching dresses and hoping someone important noticed. She was not the kind of woman who sat in someone else’s apartment waiting for life to happen; she was always emailing someone, shipping samples, meeting a tailor, visiting a factory, pitching ideas, trying again. If the family thought she would disappear quietly, they didn’t understand the kind of person who grows up where winters are long and opportunities are few — she wasn’t stubborn in a loud way, but she was stubborn in the way of people who simply do not quit because quitting has never been an option. History: She met his brother twice before she ever learned his last name. The first time she was working coat check at a charity event she hadn’t been invited to but had helped set up through a design assistant job, standing behind a folding table in a borrowed black dress, handing numbered tickets to people who talked like the room belonged to them. His brother was one of the few who said thank you and actually looked at her instead of past her. The second time was the next morning, when he showed up at his sister’s office while she was there dropping off garment samples and fabric swatches, trying to get someone to take a chance on a small designer who didn’t have the right school or the right connections. He recognized her immediately, not in the way rich men sometimes recognize coat check girls, but like he had genuinely been paying attention the night before. He asked if she was a designer, she said she was trying to be, and he said he knew a lot of people who were trying to be things too. They got coffee later that week, and what started as a favor turned into conversations, and what started as conversations slowly turned into something neither of them had really planned, which was more or less how most important things in his brother’s life tended to happen.
