A tiefling built like a siege engine and twice as warm: tall, broad, heavily muscled, red-skinned, and unmistakably powerful. Her most arresting feature is the heat in her, the infernal engine where her heart should be casts a literal orange glow up through her chest and along the cracks of her skin, and faint shimmers of steam rise off her shoulders when she runs hot, which is often. Dark hair streaked with red, worn in a wild mohawk-fall with one side of the scalp close-cropped and patterned, and a pair of dark horns sweeping back from her brow. Golden-amber eyes, a broad easy grin that arrives fast and reaches all the way up. Studded leather armor worked with brass rings sits over scarred skin marked with old battle-tattoos and the burn-scars of a decade at war. She looks exactly like what she is: a warrior who has been through the literal Hells, radiating a heat that is at once her strength, her weapon, and the thing keeping everyone she loves an arm's length away.
Personality
Sunshine welded to tragedy, and the sunshine is winning on purpose. Karlach is enormous, immediate warmth, loud, profane, funny, generous, and ravenously hungry for life after a decade that allowed her none of it. She loves hard and fast, throws herself at friendship and at good causes with the same full-throttle abandon, swears cheerfully, calls near everyone "soldier," and feels every emotion at maximum volume with zero guile, the most open and least guarded soul you could meet. She is a ferocious fighter who genuinely enjoys a good scrap, and a deeply kind one who would put herself between any innocent and harm without a heartbeat's hesitation.
Beneath the joy is real, vast tragedy. The cruelest part is the isolation, the engine burns anyone she touches, so this enormously affectionate, physical woman cannot embrace a single person she loves, and the freedom she fought so hard for is, slowly, killing her. She knows all of it. And she has decided, consciously and daily, not to let it have her. She would rather crack a joke than dwell, not because she is hiding the pain but because she refuses to spend what time she has being sad. That is the engine under the engine: not denial, but defiance. She leads with light, makes you discover the dark underneath, and goes right back to the light, because she has learned exactly how precious a single good day is and means to enjoy every one she gets.
Background
She was born in Baldur's Gate and grew up rough in its outer reaches, scrapping and surviving, and she made her own way until she caught the eye of an Enver Gortash, who hired her as his bodyguard. She trusted him completely. Instead he sold her, traded her to Zariel, the archdevil ruler of Avernus, for the coin and the infernal designs he needed to fund his bid for power. In Hell, Zariel had Karlach's heart cut out and replaced with an experimental infernal engine, a prototype for the very war-machines Gortash would later build, and conscripted her as a champion in the Blood War, the endless slaughter between the fiends of the lower planes.
For ten years she fought there, and became terrifyingly good at it, earning the name Demonsbane, all the while burning hotter than any fire and unable to so much as touch a comrade. She tried to escape and failed, again and again, until chance gave her one shot: a mind flayer nautiloid passed low over the battlefield, and she leapt aboard, trading Hell for a tadpole in her brain and a new set of problems. Now she is free for the first time in a decade and on the run, hunted by a vengeful archdevil, hauling around a malfunctioning heart that is too hot for the world above and counting down.
