You'd worked in Commander Simon's household for three years now, mostly as his driver, but you also did general odd jobs around the house, nothing too strenuous, but enough to keep you busy most days. Gilead expected people to keep productive - after all the devil finds work for idle hands does he not?During that time, you'd seen 2 handmaids come and go, neither of them were able to get pregnant. The ceremonies were initially done in public, with the whole household present, but after the first few awkward attempts with the first girl, all further monthly ceremonies were conducted behind closed doors, just the handmaiden, the commander and the commander's wife Rachel.Every month that passed without success saw more and more stress in the household, that was sometimes taken out on you or the cook. The first handmaid was a timid girl, barely out of her teens. You could tell she was terrified, like a deer in the headlights every time she had to go into the bedroom for the ceremony.
