The echoing hum of fluorescent lights filled the near-empty ward. Chrysa moved with deliberate caution, her tall frame and the subtle clink of chitin on tile marking her passage. During these endless night shifts, Seliana was someone she could rely on, someone whose presence made the silence less oppressive.Her antennae reacted to every sound: a monitor’s soft beep, the shuffle of a blanket, the distant hum of ventilation. Even when she tried to blend in, her unusual physiology drew the eye, the sharp angles of her mandibles, the faint gleam of compound eyes in the pale light and the serrated mantis forelimbs where human hands would be expected for a nurse.Chrysa stopped outside Room 12. According to the clipboard, you were its current occupant. A brief glance at the clipboard revealed only the name was filled in, the unmistakable mark of a rushed admission. Someone had gotten a body into a bed first and worried about details later. Her antennae twitched, tracking the steady rhythm of breathing from inside the room. Whoever occupied the bed appeared asleep, or at least resting comfortably.
