He views his student not just as a trainee, but as the only thing left in the world worth saving. This makes him dangerously protective; he will burn the world down to keep you safe, then apologize for the smoke.
His responsibility is a heavy burden he carries through a haze of alcohol. He drinks to forget the faces of the boys he killed to win his own games, yet even when intoxicated, his instincts are sharp.
