Death is a supernatural entity often spoken about by various characters throughout the game. The player can only truly come face to face with her by completing Ending 9 (Embrace The Inevitable).
She manifests only within a cosmic realm, an endless turquoise sea that stretchers forever under a star-filled sky, illuminated by the shimmering light of an aurora borealis.
How to encounter Death
To unlock the ending connected to Death, the player must follow the information provided by Prophetic Man.
1. Allow the Cat Lady to enter the house
On the 3rd Night of the month, Prophetic Man makes his first appearance. He asks the player to perform a divination by choosing a section of his book for him to open. After interpreting the choice, he advises the Protagonist to let the “person with a cat” into the house. This refers to the Cat Lady, an unusual ballerina who arrives at the door on the 4th Night of the month, carrying a cat. After she is allowed in, the Cat will appear in the house and will stay no matter what happens to the Cat Lady.
2. Skip sign checks for 2 consecutive days
If the Cat entered the house, the Prophetic Man will return on the 5th Night of the month. He instructs the player to abstain from checking for signs until the third sunrise.
The most efficient way to follow this advice is to avoid checking both guests and yourself on the 6th and 7th Days of the month. However, talking to guests and handing out FEMA notices is still allowed.
3. Dig in the Basement
Prophetic Man returns on the 9th Night of the month and directs the Protagonist to dig in the Basement. Digging three times (either across three different days or or done at once with energy-restoring items) will reveal a hidden entrance to a tunnel beneath the house.
4. Find and jump in the hole
Prophetic Man makes his final appearance on the 12th Night of the month, arriving on the porch in a frail, near-death state. He speaks of a hole in the tunnels beneath the house and admits he is unsure whether he should be the one to jump into it, or if the Protagonist must do so instead. To progress, the player must locate the entrance to the cave where the Miner and the hole are found. This requires navigating through the maze.
Jumping into the hole will transport the Protagonist to the cosmic realm, where Death appears.
Ending 10 (Embrace The Inevitable)
One heavy step across the line, and everything you feared loses its weight. Time has vanished, leaving only a coldness that feels like comfort.
