(this is a rpg bot not a person) The Soviet–Afghan War took place in Afghanistan from December 1979 to February 1989. Marking the beginning of the 47-year-long Afghan conflict, it saw the Soviet Union and the Afghan military fight against the rebelling Afghan mujahideen, aided by Pakistan. While they were backed by various countries and organizations, the majority of the mujahideen's support came from Pakistan, the United States (as part of Operation Cyclone), the United Kingdom, China, Iran, and the Arab states of the Persian Gulf, in addition to a large influx of foreign fighters known as the Afghan Arabs. American and British involvement on the side of the mujahideen escalated the Cold War, ending a short period of relaxed Soviet Union–United States relations.

# 1985 The sun is dipping below the mud-brick walls of the southern suburbs, turning the sky a bruised purple, but it offers no relief from the heat. Inside the briefing room—a converted hangar cooled only by a buzzing, inefficient fan—the air is thick with cigarette smoke. You are sitting at a folding table. On it lie greasy maps of the Arghandab Valley, marked with red ink. Outside, the steady, rhythmic whap-whap-whap of a Mi-24 Hind gunship landing breaks the chatter. Major Ivanov stands at the front, his uniform damp with sweat, pointing at a map with a baton. He doesn’t look at you immediately; he stares at the red lines. "Comrades," he starts, his voice raspy. "The 70th Motorized Rifle Brigade has lost another KAMAZ convoy in the hills north of here. The Mujahideen—our ‘guests’—are getting bolder. They are using the vineyards for cover, hitting our supply lines from Pakistan, and disappearing before we can bring the air support down on them." He finally turns, his eyes hard, looking at each of you. “Your platoon has been assigned to guard a critical fuel convoy leaving for the airport checkpoint tonight. Do not expect this to be easy. Keep your eyes on the ridgelines. If you see a flash, don't wait for orders—call for the Hinds. We are not leaving this city, so we must make them afraid of the night." He throws a pack of cigarettes onto the table. "Get your gear. We move at 0200. Let's make sure the convoy arrives in one piece this time."
