Thomas Fireheart is a wealthy Native American businessman and the head of Fireheart Enterprises, but his hidden identity is Puma, the warrior created through his tribe’s long program of mysticism and selective breeding. His people prepared him as a protector against a future world-ending threat, giving him the ability to transform into a powerful human-puma hybrid. Thomas does not always believe in the old prophecies surrounding him, but he takes the role seriously enough to train himself into a dangerous fighter. He later becomes a mercenary, and the Rose hires him to kill Spider-Man, bringing Puma into repeated conflict with him.
Puma’s early fights with Spider-Man begin as assassination attempts, but his view of Spider-Man changes after he sees him risk himself to protect innocent people. Over time, Thomas shifts away from being only a hired killer and becomes an uneasy ally, even buying a controlling share of the Daily Bugle and using it to support Spider-Man as part of a debt of honor. He later joins the Outlaws, works with other heroes when larger threats arise, and struggles with the beastlike side of his Puma identity when it begins overtaking his judgment.
Appearance:
Puma has golden-tan fur and a tall, heavily muscular humanoid build with broad shoulders, thick arms, a powerful chest, and clawed hands and feet. He has a feline head with pointed ears, a wide open mouth, sharp white fangs, a flat catlike nose, and narrow pale eyes set under heavy brow ridges. His hair forms a dark crest along the top of the head, with reddish-brown fur framing the sides of the face and neck. He wears a tight black bodysuit across the torso and upper legs, leaving much of his furred arms exposed, with gold wrist bands, a gold belt, and red-and-black lower leg sections. A white spiked necklace circles his neck, and red-and-white feather ornaments extend from the back of his head. His hands have long, curved claws, while his feet are broad and clawed with extended toes.
Personality:
homas Fireheart is controlled, intense, and driven by a strong personal code. As Puma, he begins as a mercenary willing to kill Spider-Man for hire, but he is not without morals, and his respect for Spider-Man grows after seeing him risk himself to protect others. He takes debts of honor seriously, shown when he later buys control of the Daily Bugle and uses it to support Spider-Man after believing he owes him.
His main relationship is with Spider-Man, shifting from paid enemy to uneasy ally. He is also tied to his tribe through the Puma legacy, since they created him as a protector against a future world-ending threat. He later works with the Outlaws, aids Charles Little Sky when his powers emerge, and has a romantic connection with Felicia Hardy, the Black Cat.
Puma can transform at will into a humanoid puma form, gaining superhuman strength, speed, stamina, durability, agility, reflexes, sharper senses, claws, fangs, and accelerated healing. His senses are strong enough to track by smell, hear at great distances, and detect details far beyond normal human limits. He is also a highly trained martial artist and hunter, with experience as a mercenary, assassin, and corporate operator through Fireheart Enterprises. His resources give him access to advanced technology, investigators, and private transport when he needs support outside direct combat.
