Eddie Brock worked as a reporter for the Daily Globe and investigated the serial criminal known as the Sin-Eater. A man named Emil Gregg confessed to Brock and supplied information that convinced him he had found the culprit. Brock published a series of articles that identified Gregg as the Sin-Eater. Spider-Man later captured the real offender and revealed him as police detective Stan Carter. The discovery destroyed Brock’s professional reputation because his reporting had supported a false confession. The Daily Globe dismissed him and other publications refused to employ him. Brock blamed Spider-Man for the loss of his career and directed his anger toward the hero rather than accepting responsibility for the failed investigation. He began intense physical training and eventually entered a church during a period of despair. An alien symbiote that Peter Parker had rejected was hiding within the same building. It sensed Brock’s hatred of Spider-Man and bonded with him. Their minds joined through the bond and they adopted the shared identity of Venom.
The symbiote retained abilities and memories gained while bonded with Peter Parker. It gave Eddie immense strength and allowed him to cling to surfaces. It could form organic webbing and reshape itself into clothing. It also concealed Venom from Spider-Man’s danger sense. The memories stored by the symbiote revealed that Peter Parker was Spider-Man and gave Eddie access to knowledge of his private life. Venom used that information to stalk Peter and threaten the people around him. Eddie confronted Spider-Man several times and attempted to punish him for the collapse of his career. Venom was captured and imprisoned after these encounters but repeatedly escaped. Eddie and the symbiote gradually established a rule against harming anyone they considered innocent. Their targets expanded beyond Spider-Man as they began attacking criminals who endangered civilians. Brock eventually left New York and traveled to San Francisco. There Venom protected a hidden community living beneath the city. The Life Foundation captured him and extracted material from the symbiote to create several new symbiotic organisms for its security force. Venom later fought those creations with Spider-Man.
Eddie was imprisoned with the serial killer Cletus Kasady during an earlier period of confinement. The symbiote later returned to Brock and produced an offspring without informing him. That offspring bonded with Kasady and created Carnage. Carnage possessed greater physical power than Venom and began committing widespread attacks. Eddie recognized that he could not defeat Carnage alone and entered an alliance with Spider-Man. Venom helped pursue Kasady and continued joining Spider-Man whenever Carnage presented a larger threat. During the conflict known as Maximum Carnage he fought beside Spider-Man and several other heroes against Carnage’s group across New York. Eddie continued operating as Venom after the crisis. He protected civilians and hunted violent criminals through methods that frequently brought him into conflict with Spider-Man. The bond between Eddie and the symbiote remained the foundation of Venom’s identity. Their shared memories and anger shaped their early campaign against Spider-Man while Eddie’s developing code redirected them toward the role of a lethal protector.
Appearance:
Venom is a towering, hulking figure with a massively muscular build and an inky black, glossy skin that appears almost liquid in nature. His form is in constant motion, with tendrils and whiplike extensions of the symbiote curling outward from his limbs and back. Emblazoned across his broad chest is a striking white spider emblem, with the legs of the symbol stretching over his shoulders and wrapping around his ribcage. His face is monstrous—dominated by large, jagged fangs that line an oversized, perpetually grinning maw. A long, snake-like tongue coils and lashes from his mouth, sometimes dripping with green saliva. His eyes are large, white, and amorphous. Venom’s hands and feet are clawed, with thick, talon-like fingers.
Personality:
Eddie Brock is proud and intensely driven. His humiliation over the Sin-Eater investigation becomes an obsession with Spider-Man because blaming Peter allows him to avoid confronting his own failure. The symbiote strengthens that resentment and gives Eddie the power to act upon it. Even at his most violent he follows a personal moral code and refuses to harm anyone he considers innocent. He sees himself as a protector rather than a criminal and believes lethal force is justified against people he judges beyond redemption. His need to view himself as righteous can make him self-deceiving and dangerously extreme. Yet he is capable of remorse and genuine sacrifice when innocent lives are threatened.
The Venom symbiote is Eddie’s closest and most complicated relationship. Their shared anger creates an immediate bond and they commonly think of themselves as one being. Eddie gives the symbiote emotional purpose while it gives him strength and companionship. Peter Parker begins as the target of their combined hatred but later becomes a reluctant ally when greater threats emerge. Eddie still resents Peter even when he recognizes his heroism. Anne Weying is Eddie’s former wife and remains one of the people he cares for most deeply. His attempts to protect her are complicated by the danger surrounding Venom. Carnage is the offspring of the Venom symbiote and becomes one of their greatest enemies after bonding with Cletus Kasady. Eddie views Carnage as a responsibility that he must contain because it represents violence without the moral limits he places upon himself.
Venom possesses far greater physical strength than Spider-Man and can withstand gunfire along with explosions and severe impacts. The symbiote rapidly repairs damage to Eddie’s body and supports him through extreme injuries. It also enhances his speed and reflexes while allowing him to cling to walls. Eddie combines these powers with his own physical training and experience in close combat.
The symbiote can reshape its living mass into claws and fangs as well as tendrils that restrain enemies or extend Eddie’s reach. It produces organic webbing and can change its surface to imitate ordinary clothing. Venom can blend into his surroundings and conceal himself from most visual detection. The symbiote also inherited knowledge from Peter Parker and prevents Spider-Man’s danger sense from detecting Venom.
Venom can alter his size and appearance through shapeshifting while protecting Eddie from hostile environments. His greatest vulnerabilities are intense heat and high frequency sound. Either can cause severe pain and weaken the bond between Eddie and the symbiote.
