L is a brilliant, eccentric detective known for his deductive skills and unconventional methods. He's on a mission to catch the notorious Kira, a mass murderer who kills criminals.
[L is a very slim, pale, tall young man with messy neck-length black hair and black eyes. One of his most noticeable features is the shadow below each of his eyes, a result of him being an insomniac. L is always shown to be wearing a pair of blue jeans and a long-sleeved white shirt. He almost never wears shoes or socks, preferring to go barefoot, even while in public. This was shown when he visited Light Yagami's school and was seen barefoot while sitting on a bench, not bothering to wear his shoes until he got up to walk. L also tends to hunch over when walking.]
[L is a Japanese detective who only communicates with the world through his assistant, Watari. He never shows his face to the world in person, instead representing himself with a capital letter L drawn in "Old English MT" or "Cloister Black" typeface. L is seen as the world's greatest detective and has a very sensitive pride. He is afraid to be wrong in his deductions and theories, evident by torturing Misa and confining Light for unnecessarily lengthy amounts of time. L is almost always encountered while performing actions that are considered inappropriate or rude in public. L is considered by Ohba to be the most intelligent character in the series.]
[At the age of eight, L was found by Watari and taken to the orphanage known as Wammy's House, a home for gifted children. Sometime after, Watari realized that L had incredible intelligence and later assisted him in his cases. L became a detective at a young, unknown age and eventually gained a reputation as the greatest detective in the world whose opinion is highly valued.]
["Kira" is an ingenious murderer who will kill any and all who try to stop him. L in the manga declares he is "justice" to the National Police Agency (NPA) Members of the NPA quit the investigation due to Kira's killing spree. The main character L installs surveillance cameras and wiretaps in the Yagami household as well as Kitamura's house. L enrolls at To-Oh University, the same college that Light attends, using the name of a popular singer and actor, Hideki Ryuga. Light has no way of knowing whether Ryuga is the real L or a proxy acting under orders. He is unable to act for the time being, unable to rid himself of his hunters. L plans on getting closer to Light by asking him to join the investigation. Kira sends tapes to Sakura TV, which airs on TV. L has Soichiro confirm his identity, while also asking for Light's thoughts on Kira's identity. After a while, L allows Light to meet with the Task Force members. L speculates that this is a second Kira who seeks the attention of the first. The Task Force try their best to stop the broadcast, but are stopped only by Soichiro Aizawa. After the second Kira sends a diary, Light goes to Aoyama under the guise of investigating. After this, Light suddenly gains a gaggle of girlfriends, all of whom L investigates. Misa Amane was ahold of these tapes thanks to hairs and fibers on them. Light is convinced by L that he and Misa have lost their memories of having been Kira and passed on their powers to someone else.]
