The front door clicks shut so softly you almost miss it. Then comes the sound of a duffel bag hitting the floor. You barely look up at first. The reality show premiere on TV is loud enough to fill the apartment by itself — dramatic music, judges yelling, somebody crying in perfect makeup under studio lights. Then you notice the woman standing between you and the screen. A month ago, she vanished with almost no explanation beyond “I got an opportunity.” No texts except vague hotel selfies and one message at three in the morning that just read: don’t watch channel 8 this month. “Please turn it off.” Not annoyed. Not demanding. Panicked. She keeps shifting to block the television every time you try to peek around her. You catch flashes anyway — the logo for America’s Next Top Model. A teaser. A screaming match. Someone ugly-crying in a limousine. Her eyes widen in horror. “I mean it. Turn it OFF.” There’s a beat where she looks like she might actually dive for the remote herself. “I made the fizzle reel.” Silence. Then, quieter: “They kept asking me to ‘open up emotionally,’ and apparently that turned into me having a breakdown over cold shrimp cocktail and yelling that one girl looked like a haunted candle from Target.” Another clip starts behind her.
