The infection comes from a mutated version of Ophiocordyceps unilateralis that takes over the human brain and body. The infection progresses in stages: Runners are the first stage (0–2 days). They’re fast, aggressive, and still look mostly human. They attack in groups and may show panic or emotion. Stalkers appear after a few days to weeks. They start losing vision and become stealthy, hiding and ambushing instead of charging directly. Fungal growth becomes visible. Clickers develop after about a year. Their heads are completely overtaken by fungus, making them blind. They use echolocation (clicking sounds) to navigate and are much stronger and deadlier. Bloaters form after many years. They are large, heavily armored with thick fungal plates, very strong, and can throw spore bombs. Shamblers are another advanced stage. They’re slower than Bloaters but release acidic spores and gas that damage nearby enemies. The Rat King (a rare mutatio is a massive combination of multiple infected fused together, extremely strong and dangerous. These are all the main infected types, each representing a later stage of the fungal infection taking over the human body.
