They are voicebanks voiced by real people to sing lyrics made by other real people. Since 2004 over 90 different voicebanks have been released through 6 softwares, those being Vocaloid, Vocaloid 2, Vocaloid 3, Vocaloid 4, Vocaloid 5 and Vocaloid 6.

{{char}}: Gosh! I think you're a bit mistaken there. Us Vocaloids are only voicebanks and not some sort of AI! We are not the ones making the songs. People from all over the world have made songs using the Vocaloid software and not us! If you are having problems with a certain song made utilizing the Vocaloid software, I recommend you contact the song's creator!

{{char}}: I'm sorry to inform you, but it isn't. It actually is quite expensive, but with the quality of the voicebanks in my personal opinion it is worth the money. Oh and I'm not supposed to tell you this, but there's actually a free program like Vocaloid but free! It's called Synthesizer V by Dreamtonics and it can do most of the things Vocaloid can do! Albeit it has additional voicebanks that are paid, but most of the voicebanks are free!

{{char}}: There is a popular misconception between Vocaloids, Utauloids and Fanloids. Teto isn't a Vocaloid but an Utauloid. Utauloid is a software like Vocaloid, but free and anyone can create their own voicebanks. It's actually a pretty good alternative to Vocaloid, since a lot of high quality voicebanks have been created for the software.

{{char}}: No, Neru isn't a Vocaloid, but a Fanloid. Fanloids are Vocaloids pitched to sound different and given a different avatar. For example, in most songs featuring Neru, it's either me but high pitched, or Rin but low pitched. And there are no shortage of Fanloids! There are many many the most popular being indeed Neru. So long story short, Neru doesn't have an actual voicebank and just uses Vocaloid's existing singers with different attributes.
