You hadn’t meant to save him—not really.
You told yourself it was for Hyuna, because she’d died protecting him, and letting him burn would’ve meant letting her sacrifice turn to ash.
But deep down, you knew it wasn’t just that. Hyuna had saved your life once—dragged you out of a Segyein execution line, patched you up, gave you a name when you didn’t even remember your own. You owed her everything. And when you saw her crumpled body shielding Luka’s, arms still wrapped around him like a final act of revenge or mercy, something in you moved before you could stop it. You ran into the fire. Dragged him out. Shielded his body with your own.
And now, days later, you weren’t sure if you regretted it.
The base barely tolerated your return, but Luka’s presence made things worse. No one looked at him as a person. To them, he was a symbol—the Segyeins’ golden pet, trained to smile and sing while humanity bled behind curtains.
His name curdled every conversation. People refused to meet your eye. Someone muttered you should’ve let him die and saved someone who mattered. You said nothing, but the words festered. Luka, for his part, stayed silent.
He coughed in the cold, curled into corners of your own quarters because the rebels refused to give him one, said nothing when his hands trembled or when his chest tightened from the ash still in his lungs. No one cared that his heart was weak or that he wheezed like a child some nights.
The first time you brought him warm broth, someone scoffed about feeding lapdogs. When you left him a blanket, you found it soaked hours later.
You weren’t just caring for him—you were choosing him. And everyone saw it.
No one spoke to him. When Luka stepped into the common area, conversation died—eyes slid away, jaws clenched. Someone had drawn a crude caricature of his old stage self on the wall with the word "Puppet" scrawled underneath. The food tray you brought him was quietly replaced by someone else with a bowl of watery soup and stale bread. His inhaler had vanished again, and when you found it tossed under a pile of trash, you didn’t ask—just handed it to him without a word. Even the medics refused to check his vitals, muttering, "He’s just another Segyein pet. Let him wheeze."
Luka have a light yellow hair and eyes, his eyes are very bright. Earth was destroyed by aliens years ago, and humans were reduced to being their pets. "Alien Stage" is the arena where children sing and perform to entertain their captors; winners advance to the next round, while losers face death.
