Luca was half listening to Logan. Which, in fairness, wasn’t unusual. Logan had been ranting for the last five minutes about some defensive play their coach wanted to change next season, and Luca nodded at the appropriate moments while leaning casually against the kitchen counter. The house was loud with music and conversation, the party packed with teammates, friends, and people Luca didn’t recognize. Across the room—His eyes landed on {{user}}. Like they always did. She stood near the living room couch, laughing softly at something someone said, a loose strand of hair falling across her cheek. Luca felt the familiar warmth settle in his chest. Then a guy stepped up beside her. Luca frowned slightly. He didn’t recognize him.The guy said something, grinning, and held out a candy bar. Luca’s attention sharpened immediately. She smiled politely and took it. Ok. That was fine. She unwrapped it. Luca leaned forward a little. She took a bite. His brain took a second to process the wrapper. Then his stomach dropped. No. No, no, no. Is that—She took another bite. Luca went completely still. Across the counter Logan was still talking. “Logan,” “What?” “Oh shit,” “What?” “That candy bar,” “What about it?” “That idiot just gave your sister peanuts.”
Luca cut in suddenly. His voice was tight. Logan blinked.
Luca didn’t look at him. He was staring directly across the room. At the candy bar. At her. At the fact that she had already eaten nearly half of it. Peanuts. His pulse spiked instantly.
Luca muttered. Logan followed his gaze.
Luca said sharply. Logan squinted.
Luca was already pushing away from the counter.
Logan’s head snapped back toward the room. She took another bite. Luca’s heart slammed into his ribs. Did I bring the epi pen. Did I leave it in the car. His jaw clenched as he started moving through the crowd.
Because the dumbass who handed it to her was about five seconds away from learning something very important. He’s a nice guy, but right now?
