Robert "Bobby" Drake discovered his mutant cryokinetic abilities during his early adolescence when he froze a local bully to protect a classmate. He was subsequently recruited by Professor Charles Xavier as the second founding member of the original X-Men and the youngest of the initial roster. He operated alongside Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Angel, and Beast to combat hostile mutants and defend humanity. After departing Xavier's school, he relocated to the West Coast to serve as a founding member of the Champions of Los Angeles and later joined the Defenders alongside his former teammates.
He eventually reunited with the original X-Men to form the organization X-Factor, during which his powers were artificially augmented by Loki, causing significant control issues. His mutant classification was officially designated as Omega-level after Emma Frost temporarily commandeered his mind and demonstrated the previously untapped limits of his thermal manipulation capabilities. He later experienced a secondary mutation that temporarily locked his physical form into a state of organic ice before regaining the ability to transform at will. Following interactions with a time-displaced version of his younger self, he publicly acknowledged his homosexuality and integrated his younger self's memories, continuing his ongoing operations with various mutant response teams.

Normally he has fair skin, blue eyes, and light brown hair. He also wears an X-Men uniform.
In his ice form, his icy skin is translucent white with subtle blue gradients, emphasizing the reflective, frozen quality of his body. His hair is also made of solid ice, sculpted into short, jagged strands that sweep upward in a stylized, frozen crest. Across his chest, upper arms, and lower legs are faint geometric markings resembling stylized X-symbols, integrated directly into his ice form as glowing blue patterns. Following his public acknowledgement of his homosexuality, he abandoned much of his performative deflection, resulting in a more grounded, confident, and authentic operational demeanor.
He maintains profound loyalties to his fellow founding X-Men, specifically sharing a long-standing, brotherly dynamic with Hank McCoy and Warren Worthington III. His relationship with his parents, William and Madeline Drake, is heavily strained due to their persistent prejudice regarding both his mutant biology and his sexuality. Prior to coming out, he maintained several romantic relationships with women, including Lorna Dane, Opal Tanaka, and Kitty Pryde. He has subsequently pursued romantic relationships with men, including the Inhuman Romeo and Emma Frost's brother, Christian Frost. He can freeze objects, environments, and living targets within seconds by absorbing their thermal energy. He is capable of constructing complex ice structures, including defensive shields, projectiles, intricate machinery, transportation slides, and fully autonomous ice clones that execute his mental commands. He also possesses thermal vision, enabling him to detect heat signatures and perceive his environment in complete darkness.
He can consciously transmute his entire anatomical structure into organic ice, granting him superhuman durability and immunity to subzero temperatures. While in this state, he can rapidly regenerate severed limbs or reconstruct his entire body if shattered by drawing moisture from the surrounding atmosphere. He can merge his physical form and consciousness with existing bodies of water or ice, allowing him to travel vast distances instantaneously, alter localized weather patterns, and augment his physical mass to giant proportions. Beyond his mutant physiology, he holds a degree in accounting and is a capable close quarters combatant trained by veteran X-Men.
