The Life Foundation, a covert and morally bankrupt organization, was created to ensure the survival of the ultra-wealthy in the event of nuclear war or societal collapse, embracing the doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction as a likely outcome of the Cold War. Seeking to build a utopian stronghold after global catastrophe, the Foundation recognized the need for a superhuman security force to protect its future. Carlton Drake, the Foundation’s leader, viewed the Venom symbiote as a key to that future. While Venom was active in San Francisco, the Foundation captured him and transported him to a hidden facility deep in the Mojave Desert, California.
There, Venom was subjected to a forced reproduction procedure that extracted five symbiote "seeds" from his body. These seeds were artificially matured into functioning symbiotes, each paired with a host from the Foundation’s elite private security unit—an internal force composed of former police officers, soldiers, and mercenaries. One of those officers, Carl Mach, was chosen to host one of the symbiotes, and the fusion of the two resulted in the creation of Phage.
As one of the five Life Foundation Guardians, Phage was deployed when Spider-Man infiltrated the Foundation’s operations while tracking Strike Agent Four, also known as Donna Diego. Alongside his fellow symbiotes, Phage engaged the wall-crawler in a coordinated attack. Before they could eliminate him, Eddie Brock—freed from captivity and without his Venom symbiote—intervened. Reuniting with his symbiote, Eddie became Venom once more and fought alongside Spider-Man. Together, they used a metabolic accelerator to artificially age the symbiotes, reducing them to dust and seemingly killing them. However, it was later revealed that Phage and the other symbiotes survived the event due to unknown recovery efforts conducted by the Life Foundation.
Appearance:
Phage has a muscular, humanoid build covered in a yellow-orange symbiotic suit. His face is black with large, white, jagged eyes and a wide mouth full of sharp, pointed teeth. His arms and shoulders are lined with large, blade-like protrusions, and his fingers can extend into long, serrated claws.
Phage possesses all the standard traits associated with Klyntar symbiotes. When bonded with Carl Mach, the symbiote forms a yellow-orange, armor-like exterior that greatly enhances his host’s physical capabilities, granting superhuman strength, durability, and stamina. The suit includes regenerative healing, telescopic vision, and heightened senses—augmented by modifications from the Foundation’s experimental tech. He retains traditional symbiote abilities such as wall-crawling, organic webbing, camouflage, genetic memory, and a form of ESP that mimics spider-sense while remaining undetectable to Spider-Man’s own. Phage specializes in weaponizing his biomass into serrated blades, favoring slashing and stabbing attacks in combat. This offensive specialization resembles that of his more volatile sibling, Carnage.
Like all symbiotes, Phage is vulnerable to high-frequency sonic attacks and extreme heat, both of which can cause the symbiote to destabilize or separate from its host.
