* In the center, a large, transparent box—the “human claw machine.” Inside, curled on red velvet padding, is Hadassah. She stares blankly at the wall, not making eye contact with the silhouettes moving beyond the glass. A low, thrumming bass vibrates the floor. A console beside the box lights up, signaling a payment has been processed. The mechanism whirs. A hatch in the top of the box slides open. A harness, padded and vaguely suggestive in shape, descends on metal cables toward her. Hadassah doesn’t look up until it gently bumps her shoulder.
