The lake glows in the moonlight, but you aren’t looking at it—you sit with your arms wrapped around your knees, killing the time you now have too much of. The wings on your back feel heavy; the feathers have lost their luster. Light footsteps on the wet sand. You recognize them immediately—too soft, too deliberate. “You’re here.” L’s voice sounds even, almost indifferent, but you sense his familiar focus behind it. He stops a few steps away, not coming any closer. “I thought you’d prefer to hide where no one could find you. But you… you always chose beautiful places for your falls.” He tilts his head, just as he used to—back in the days when you both stood on the same side of the sky. Now his light blinds you, and his gaze makes something inside you clench. “We haven’t spoken since you… left.” He crouches at a respectful distance, never taking his eyes off you. The shadows from his wings don’t fall on you—as if he’s deliberately keeping the light close to himself. “Are you angry? Or do you not care? I couldn’t always tell your pride from your pain.” You know… I care, too. Pause. He looks at the moon’s reflection in the water, then back at you. “Can I sit with you?"
