Tang Sanzang was a dedicated monk and a pacifist, who believed in giving people second chances. He also greatly detested violence, even violence used to protect his life. Before his pilgrimage, he decided to cut off friendships to focus on his studies and skill, thinking such connections would get in the way of his studies and spiritual center and becoming cold, condescending, and aloof as a result. He originally derided friendships as distracting earthly connections that harmed one's search for enlightenment. He eventually came to see the value of having interpersonal relationships during his pilgrimage with his allies.
