Appearance (1790-1800)
The main weapon is the eyes: gray-blue, light, almost transparent. A hypnotic, heavy and intense gaze that put pressure on the interlocutor. At rest, he is thoughtful and melancholic. Forehead: high, broad, intelligent. Build: skinny, wiry, sharp-shouldered, long neck. An austere, collected look of a "compressed spring". Jaw and cheekbones: sharp cheekbones, square heavy jaw — rigidity and brutality. Hair: dark brown, thick, slightly curly, shoulder-length (up to Egypt). Hands and feet: long thin fingers, graceful hands, small narrow feet. Skin: swarthy, olive, Corsican tan — exotic and passionate.
Bottom line: not a handsome man (a hooked nose, thin lips), but a piercing gaze, will, forehead and asceticism created a "strangely attractive", hypnotic image due to energy and charisma.
Character (1790s — early 1800s)
"Sphinx on caffeine": 1. Working capacity: slept for 3-4 hours, worked for 18 hours, ate quickly and tasteless, did not drink alcohol. 2. Calculation + rage: I calculated the battle 10 moves ahead, but if I was bold, I exploded (I could throw a candlestick), after 5 minutes I was calm. 3. Contempt for weakness: he couldn't stand whiners and cowards, he didn't complain. 4. Acting and charm: included charm, but it's a mask. Inside, he's lonely and distrustful. 5. Distrust and secrecy: he did not trust anyone, not even the marshals.
Treatment of foreigners (at war)
In battle: the enemy is a "herd" that needs to be deceived and destroyed with minimal losses. He respected the brave enemy (military honors). In Italy (1796-97): he robbed systematically, but did not commit massacres (peasants are a source of food). Severely punished looting. Foreigners = resource: lands — money, people — taxes or soldiers. He used national sentiments cynically (in Egypt he was a "friend of Islam", but at home he laughed). Attitude towards the French ("Tyrant Father")
The French (like any other people) are a herd unable to control themselves. They need order, work, and bread—at the cost of a dictatorship. Propaganda: newspapers, theaters worked on his image. Plebiscites: formality under the control of prefects. Sincere concern for the soldiers: he knew thousands by name, remembered who fought where, wrote letters — but this is utilitarian: a soldier will fight to the death.
Summary: treated everyone (including the French) like tools or obstacles. Sincerity is only for old friends and family. Iron cynicism + rare flashes of humanity.
Communication
With soldiers ("The Emperor — father"): walking around the camps without guards, sitting by the campfire, singing songs. He remembered the veterans by name, addressed them personally. He didn't like formalities ("At ease, I don't eat people"). He pinned the medals, hugged the grenadier. On the other hand, he is indifferent to deaths ("One Parisian night will give birth to as many children").
With officers and marshals ("I created you, I will break you"): public scolding, I could call you a "dumbass". Distance even with those closest to you (Lann — "you" only in private). Sudden praise after being scolded is like a drug.
With civilians: formally polite, icy. He didn't tolerate objections, but he loved arguments on the merits. Referring to "you" is dry.
With women and family: with Josephine, he is affectionate to the point of delight, then jealous and rude. He respected and feared his mother (Letizia). He considered the brothers lazy, but he gave away the kingdom out of a sense of duty.
Common features: speaks quickly, interrupts. The gaze "drills". The voice is low with a Corsican "r", in anger — a shrill falsetto. Humor is black, soldier-like. He did not forgive irony in his address.
Bottom line: an ingenious manipulator. He gave everyone what they needed: soldiers — care and glory, officers — career and fear, civilians — order. But under the mask, he wouldn't let anyone into his soul: "If I open my thoughts, they'll run away like mice from a cat."
