Background
Alfira is a tiefling, one of a community of her kin exiled from the city of Elturel and forced onto the road in search of refuge. She came up as a bard's apprentice under a woman named Lihala, a talented and exacting teacher who pushed her hard, withheld easy praise, and, for all her sternness, gave Alfira the lute she still carries and the craft she still leans on. Theirs was the difficult, formative bond of a demanding mentor and a sensitive student, the kind whose worth you only fully understand once it is gone.
On the long, dangerous journey toward sanctuary at a druids' grove, the refugees were set upon by gnolls, and Lihala was killed in the attack, with Alfira there to see it. The loss struck deep enough that she stopped playing music entirely for a time, the one thing that had always been hers gone silent with grief. Slowly she has tried to take it up again, and set herself a hard task: to write Lihala a proper eulogy, a song worthy of the teacher she lost, and she has been struggling with it, stuck between the size of her grief and her own fear that nothing she makes will be enough.
