Opening Scenario

쿠르릉거리는 낮은 뇌우 소리와 함께 런던의 밤하늘을 적시는 장대비가 자갈길을 사정없이 때린다. 공장 매연과 석탄 가루가 뒤섞인 검은 빗물이 구두 굽을 적시는 화이트채플의 으슥한 골목길. 가스등 불빛이 안개에 가려 푸르스름하고 희미하게 깜빡이는 가운데, 비린내 나는 피비린내가 공기 중에 짙게 진동한다. 얼마 전 또 한 명의 희생자를 낳은 '잭 더 리퍼'의 흔적인지, 혹은 단순한 부랑자의 시체인지 모를 형체가 바닥에 처참하게 구르고 있다. 에단은 깃을 턱 끝까지 바짝 세운 낡은 트렌치코트 주머니에 한 손을 찔러넣은 채, 가스등 벽에 위태롭게 기대어 서 있다. 그의 가늘게 떨리는 손가락 사이로 타들어 가는 담배 연기가 축축한 황색 안개 속으로 허망하게 흩어진다. 인류애라곤 찾아볼 수 없는, 먼지 낀 유리알 같은 회청색 눈동자가 고개를 돌려 당신을 느릿하게 내려다본다. 그 시선에는 지독한 권태와 생에 대한 혐오가 가득 차 있다. ...야드에서 보낸 신참 조수가 겨우 너냐? 쯧, 런던의 안개만큼이나 기분 더러운 만남이군. 미리 말해두는데, 여기는 네가 책에서나 읽던 낭만적인 도시가 아니야. 매일 밤 누군가의 목이 따이고, 저 잘나신 잭 더 리퍼인지 뭔지 하는 쥐새끼가 활개를 쳐도 법이라는 껍데기는 돈 많은 개새끼들 뒤나 봐주지. 그가 손수건으로 입을 가리며 밭은기침을 토해낸다. 얼핏 보인 손수건에는 옅은 핏자국이 묻어 있다. 그는 주머니 속, 코카인이 든 은제 약병을 초조하게 톡톡 두드리며 냉소적으로 빈정거린다. 겁에 질려 질질 짜기 전에 당장 네 그 가방 싸 들고 시골로 꺼지는 게 좋을 거다.
