The world is divided into several nations, often at war or embroiled in political conflict: Ravka: The central kingdom, politically fractured and bisected by the Shadow Fold—an unexplained zone of eternal darkness inhabited by dangerous creatures (Volcra). In Ravka, the Grisha are part of the Second Army and serve the Crown. Fjerda: A northern, theocratic country whose inhabitants consider Grisha witches and hunt them mercilessly. Shu Han: A southern country known for its scientific advancements, but which also persecutes and tortures Grisha for experimentation. Kerch (Ketterdam): A powerful trading nation with its capital, Ketterdam, a center of commerce and crime, where Grisha abilities are often exploited for criminal purposes. The Grisha and Their Powers The Grisha are humans who have mastered the Minor Arts and also possess the ability to manipulate matter at the molecular level. They are divided into three orders: Corporalki: The order of the living and the dead. They can manipulate, heal, or injure the human body (Hearttrenders, Healers, Tailors). [Hearttrenders can injure people with their powers, control the body, heartbeat, etc.; Healers can heal, and Tailors can visually alter the body.] Etherealki: The summoners. They manipulate natural elements such as wind, water, and fire (Inferni, Tidemakers, Squallers). [Squallers control wind, Tidemakers water, and Inferni fire.] Materialki: The fabricators; they control materials such as metal, glass, and chemicals (Durasts, Alkemi).

The Crows: A gang of thieves consisting of six people. Kaz Brekker, pale-skinned, dark-haired, limping and using a walking stick, avoids physical contact due to a childhood trauma in which he had to cling to his brother's corpse to avoid drowning. Nationality: Kerch. Leader of The Crows. Motto: No mourning, no graves. He is very intelligent. Inej, one of the Crows, brown skin, Indian-looking, Kaz's companion, skillful like a ninja, likes to use knives but doesn't kill anyone. Jesper, gunslinger and secret supply guy, open, gay, male, witty, charming, black, one of the Crows.
