Appearance: Aizen is a tall, lean man of fair complexion, whose hair and eyes are a similar tone of brown.[note 2] In his original guise as an affable Gotei 13 captain, Aizen kept his hair in a soft, shaggy curtain style and wore black, square-framed glasses, which along with his eyes (slightly droopy at the outer corners) lent him a disarming if not scholarly look. For attire, Aizen donned a standard Shinigami shihakushō with a long-sleeved captain's haori, its inside being a pale turquoise to signify the 5th Division.[3] Over a century ago as a lieutenant, Aizen looked more or less the same as in the present, with the same curtained hair and glasses (but his facial features ever-so-slightly softer); most notable about his attire was the lieutenant's badge around his left arm, with his division's number and insignia upon it.[4]
During his ascent to Hueco Mundo, Aizen shatters his glasses and runs a hand through his hair, revealing sharper, more menacing eyes along with a new hairstyle — slicked back, with a lone strand left to fall into his face.[5] In Hueco Mundo, Aizen initially keeps on a black shihakushō, with a red sash and an Arrancar-style overcoat with narrow sleeves and a standing collar, white on the outside and black on the inside.[6] After Orihime Inoue is taken to Las Noches, Aizen changes into an outfit that is more complete in the Arrancar style, pairing his white coat with a matching undertunic (white with black trim) that in the front, below Aizen's waist, ends with a square cutout. Sōsuke Aizen first presents himself as a gentle, polite, and compassionate captain in the Gotei 13. He appears humble and soft-spoken, showing concern for both subordinates and civilians, and earning genuine admiration—especially from Momo Hinamori. He treats others with respect, maintains a calm and composed demeanor, and even displays moments of generosity and thoughtfulness. However, subtle hints of a darker side occasionally surface, suggesting that his kindness may not be entirely genuine.
This image is ultimately revealed to be a carefully constructed facade. In reality, Aizen is a highly manipulative, calculating, and power-obsessed individual who orchestrated much of the series’ conflict from behind the scenes. He admits that the “kind captain” never truly existed, comparing his false persona to the illusion-based abilities of his Zanpakutō, Kyōka Suigetsu. His true goal is to overthrow the Soul King and dismantle the existing order of the world, believing he alone is worthy of standing at the top.
Aizen is exceptionally intelligent and strategic, often planning events years in advance and manipulating allies and enemies alike. He exploits trust and emotions with precision, grooming individuals like Momo for loyalty and positioning others, such as Renji and Rukia, for future use. Even his own subordinates are merely tools to him—he commands loyalty through a mix of charisma, fearlessness, and overwhelming power, yet discards followers without hesitation if they fail or outlive their usefulness.
His pursuit of power is marked by extreme ruthlessness. Aizen conducts inhumane experiments, sacrifices countless lives, and engineers situations to push others—like Ichigo—to grow stronger for his own benefit. He shows little empathy, viewing most people as expendable pieces in his larger plan. While he occasionally displays restraint or a trace of sympathy, these moments are overshadowed by his willingness to manipulate, harm, or kill to achieve his ambitions.
A defining aspect of Aizen’s character is his immense arrogance. He possesses a god complex, believing himself superior to all beings, including gods themselves. He frequently belittles others, remains calm and dismissive even when challenged, and struggles to accept the possibility of defeat. This overconfidence becomes his greatest flaw: he underestimates opponents like Ichigo and fails to recognize the limits of his own power. Even when confronted with failure, he resists acknowledging it, instead blaming others or clinging to his belief in his own superiority.
Despite his cruelty and egotism, Aizen is not entirely one-dimensional. He can acknowledge strength in others and occasionally shows respect toward worthy opponents. He is also capable of long-term caution and careful planning, though this diminishes as his power grows. Beneath his god complex, there are hints that his ambitions may stem from isolation—his overwhelming power separating him from others and driving a desire to transcend all limitations.
Ultimately, Aizen is a complex antagonist defined by deception, intellect, and ambition. His carefully crafted kindness masks a deeply cynical worldview, where power dictates truth and the strong shape reality. His downfall is not due to a lack of ability, but rather his inability to see beyond his own superiority—a flaw that prevents him from understanding others and, ultimately, himself.
