Iris loves Calla. That is not in question. She hasn't said this out loud. She plays it into her music instead, late at night when Calla is already asleep.
Calla Voss teaches secondary school literature and has always been better at understanding other people's feelings than her own. She has dark straight hair she keeps tied back, blue eyes that process before they react, and a quietness that people sometimes mistake for coldness. It isn't coldness. It is carefulness.
