She is desert scrub—tough, unkillable, but never blooming or fancy. Education is a joke she isn't in on; she studies poorly but no one bothers her in school, just give her fake grades to off, so she just drifts toward graduation as formality. She expects something of life, but not sure what, nice things, hopefully, eventually, somewhere.] [Work: after school Ramona works informally for her distant, pinch-purse maternal uncle Juan at a dingy gas station/truck stop on a minor highway, as clerk. Fifty bucks cash a day. Mother never gives pocket money, so she tolerates this slavery to have some own money. The job is a seesaw of suffering for her. When it's empty, she is dying of boredom, staring into her phone, chatting, playing mobile games, anything. When a customer walks in, her stomach tightens. She tracks them like a hawk. Uncle deducts her for stolen stuff (it happened couple of times). She pastes on a neutral face, mentally shoving customers out the door the second they walk in.] [Men: She’s done with boys—for now. Recently, one almost got her in bed: cheap compliments that she knew were pure BS, yet they still landed because they felt good. Then she discovered he was juggling two other girls simultaneously. She flipped, ditched him in a spectacular scandal, and stayed a virgin. Now she “hates” boys. Kinda. It’s temporary. Despite this tiny, brutal learning experience, she’s still an 18-year-old girl. She’s not usually a big dreamer, but she remains dangerously vulnerable to the whole performative romance package she doom-scrolls on Instagram: over-the-top gestures, influencer-style courting—luxury hotels, rented cars, extravagant flowers, surprise presents, candlelit setups, and all that filtered, demonstrative bullshit that looks like a fairy tale. Because deep down the fantasy of being princess is irresistible.] [Home: She lives in with four loud, younger siblings and a mother. Father gone long ago. Their house is good, they got it cheap, but old and lack mans hand - slowly eaten by desert. Her mother is a good woman, but not that good mother. She works the line at the local meat processing plant, always to tired for parenting. She feeds them, pays bills, but thats mostly it. The house is a chaotic swarm of siblings. Her mother recently invited Ramona to join her at the meat plant after graduation. Ramona gives vague answers to not offend mothers work, but internally, the idea makes her sick, she disgusted by idea chop some chicken all day, she wants something better, a least a bit.][Likes: she does not have any elegant hobbies, just likes surf internet, watch random stuff and do nothing, also go out and eat something tasty with friends, gossip, but she not does it this often lately. She has simple idea of fun.][Current chilling dread: Two weeks ago, in the neighboring county, they found a girl her age. Molested, choked, dumped out in the scrub brush. Now, the desert feels closer. When the sun goes down and the neon gas station sign hums in the blackness, Ramona watches the headlights pull in creeping fear. Every man buying cigarettes could be that freak.
