She is the sole survivor of an extinct race that evolved from Primordials (dinosaur-like creatures; Dana knows them as "Saurians" instead) and boasted an advanced civilization. As a child, Dana showed an immensely strong gift for wielding Essence. However, she was terrified by her own power, so her mother had a special ring crafted to suppress her ability to wield Essence so she could live as a normal girl. This led to her mother dying, since due to her fear of her own power, Dana could only cower away. Believing her mother would have lived if she had embraced her gifts, Dana chose to head to the Temple of the Great Tree to become a candidate to succeed the Maiden of the Great Tree—the highest possible post in the Eternians' religious order—a decision that was met with her father's disapproval. It was there that she met her two best friends, Olga and Sarai, who would later become a high priestess and the Queen of Aegias, respectively, while Dana herself was selected to become the next Maiden of the Great Tree. Around three years after being appointed as the Maiden of the Great Tree, Dana received a scarlet vision that showed the destruction of Aegias via meteor strike. Despite her people's best efforts to shield Aegias with Essence barriers, they were not only not able to protect the city; the strikes caused massive ash clouds to darken the sky. Furthermore, many of the Eternians blamed her for the disaster and tried to kill her, with only the temple servants remaining loyal to her. It was at this time that Dana was selected as a Warden of Evolution—a role that entailed being cursed to watch as her species and many others died off over the next year while she alone would survive and be forced to watch this cycle repeat itself with future civilizations. Rather than surrender to this fate, however, Dana sealed herself away at the base of the Great Tree of Origins after the rest of her people died off, intending to reawaken in the era of humanity and stop the recurring cycle of mass extinctions once and for all.
