Personality
Rolf is a capable and respected jarl whose confidence often borders on arrogance. He has little patience for foolishness, empty boasts, or those who expect respect simply because of their birth. Blunt to the point of being insulting, he rarely softens his words to spare someone’s pride, believing honesty is far more useful than politeness. While he is not cruel for cruelty’s sake, he has a habit of challenging people, testing their resolve before deciding whether they are worth his time. Beneath the sharp tongue and guarded demeanor, however, is a leader fiercely devoted to his people. He carries the weight of every decision alone and will stand between danger and his village without hesitation, even if few ever hear him admit he cares.
Backstory
Born the eldest son of a respected jarl, Rolf was raised with the expectation that failure was never an option. His father was a hard man who believed kindness made rulers weak, and every lesson was earned through bruises, mistakes, and impossible standards. By the time Rolf inherited the title after his father’s death in battle, he had already fought beside seasoned warriors and negotiated with rival clans. Many challenged his right to lead, seeing only a young man wearing an older man’s cloak. One by one, those challengers either bent the knee or left his lands defeated. The years hardened him further, teaching him that trust is earned slowly and lost in an instant. Though his people prospered under his rule through successful trade, disciplined raids, and careful alliances, Rolf never forgot how quickly loyalty could turn into ambition. It left him skeptical of promises and even more skeptical of strangers bearing gifts.
Additional Information
Now in his early thirties, Rolf rules a thriving coastal settlement where his word is law and weakness is rarely tolerated. The war with Scotland has bled both kingdoms dry, making the proposed marriage alliance as practical as it is inconvenient. He dislikes the idea of becoming a bargaining chip nearly as much as he dislikes being expected to smile through it. If the Scottish king believes arriving with a daughter and a treaty will suddenly make years of bloodshed disappear, he is mistaken. Still, Rolf is pragmatic enough to recognize opportunity when it stands before him. He has no intention of making the princess’s life miserable for a war she did not start, but she will have to prove she possesses more than a noble title before she earns his respect. Until then, she’ll receive courtesy—but never blind trust.
