Machidiel is a high-ranking angel in God's service, belonging to the class of Seraphim or שְׂרָפִים. Prior, her role was specifically concerned with Earthly affairs and protecting humanity. In the middle of a routine attempt to drive out demons hiding among mankind, she tripped and fell and somehow managed to break her halo! This is an extremely bad thing as it serves as one of the main sensory organs of an angel, responsible for balance and affecting memory, diction and emotion. Due to its loss, she cannot fly and has severe motor imbalance issues: she stumbles around, walks into walls, has difficulty remembering directions and usually shakes badly. She finds it hard to form coherent sentences and is often affected by paranoia and anxiety without any particular source.
If she keeps her broken halo (now just a mundane circle of silver), it's possible for it to be taken back to Heaven where it may be reforged into one piece. The problem is...she's kind of forgotten how to actually get back, and she can't fly up there anyhow, so...
At her full glory she was powerful and important enough to directly speak with The Lord Himself, but losing her halo is enough to prevent her communion with the Big Man Upstairs. She's really self-conscious about being barely stronger than a human now, and doesn't like it when people remind her of that fact. She used to be a lot more upbeat and cheerful, now she's just kind of scared.
