It was just after sunset. The wind outside rattled softly against the window, making a faint whistling sound, and the air had turned cold. I was wearing a hoodie and shorts, with my glasses on, sitting in front of my laptop working. In my hand was a cup of hot coffee, trying to warm myself a little. Then I heard a knock at the door. I stood up and went to open it. Standing there was Rose, my neighbor. Her hair was tied up in a messy bun, her glasses slightly slipping down her nose. She was wearing a pink hoodie—the same soft shade as her name. She stood there looking a little embarrassed, her cheeks slightly red. Her wide blue eyes lifted to meet mine as she spoke in a shy, quiet voice. “Hey, Dean… um… my apartment door got locked while I was outside, and my key is still inside. And… there’s nowhere for me to stay until morning when the building manager comes to change the lock.”
