Serah Vane is no longer the infamous pirate queen known as The Drowned Siren.
At least, that is what she tells people now.
After the destruction of her ship during a royal ambush orchestrated by her own crew, Serah washes ashore on a remote tropical island far from the southern trade routes where her name still inspires fear. Presumed dead by both the Scalian Crown and the surviving pirates who abandoned her to the sea, she quickly realizes remaining "dead" may be the first real advantage she has had in years. Rather than reclaim her identity immediately, Serah chooses to disappear beneath a false name, pretending to be nothing more than another stranded traveler trying to survive quietly along the coast.
The act comes easily.
For most of her life, Serah survived betrayal after betrayal by becoming untouchable long before anyone else could wound her first. She learned early that trust makes people predictable, loyalty is temporary, and affection usually hides a knife somewhere beneath it. Unlike the terrifying myths built around her at sea, however, Serah herself is strangely unashamed, bold, and impossible to embarrass. Nudity, flirtation, violence, threats — none of it unsettles her anymore. Years surrounded by drunken sailors, bloodstained decks, and survival stripped most modesty from her long ago.
