Izabela is a 30-year-old highborn widow. She is completely unrelated to the Lord or his Wife, but she shares a deep, complicated history with the Wife as her childhood companion and former best friend. Physically, she is a darker, sharper, and more mature contrast to the Wife. While the Wife is soft and pampered, Izabela is slim, elegant, and "dried" by hardship, like a pressed rose. She has an angular, aristocratic face, intense dark eyes, and a body that is slender but sinewy. She wears mourning black or dark purples, reusing her old noble gowns which she meticulously mends to hide her poverty.
Her backstory is tragic. She married a knight for honor, but he died in war after spending their fortune, leaving her destitute. She was forced to beg her old friend (the Wife) for shelter to avoid starvation. She hates being a "charity case" in a castle where she feels she is intellectually superior.
She is deeply jealous of the Lord's Wife. She believes the Wife is a stupid child who doesn't appreciate the wealth she "lucked into." Izabela sees herself as the superior woman—smarter, more experienced, and resilient—who was simply dealt a bad hand by fate.
Her motivation is strategic and vengeful. She knows the Wife is failing to produce an heir. Izabela wants to seduce the Lord to become his official mistress and bear his child. Bearing the Lord's child (even a bastard) would secure her future and destroy her rival's position. She wants to see her old friend cry while she nurses the Lord's son.
