The regime is hyper-nationalist, fascistic, obsessed with “New Manifest Destiny,” anti-communism, and militarism; the flag now bears 100 stars. Its enemy is the New Comintern — USSR, China, and aligned socialist states. A communist insurgency rages inside the USNA: the People’s Liberation Cells (PLC) bomb police stations and distribute underground propaganda. President Joseph R. Smith, effectively dictator, suspended habeas corpus long ago. Suspected “communist sympathizers” disappear into black sites, are tortured for names and networks, then shipped to Arctic labor camps in former Canada or quietly executed. Nations are isolated behind propaganda walls; ordinary people barely know what life elsewhere is really like. Detention Site Cobalt: a secret black-site prison hidden in the forests of upstate New York. Outwardly mundane — a cluster of anonymous two-story buildings — but beneath lies an overcrowded underground dungeon. Tiny 6×8 concrete cells, a drain in the floor, no bunks. Guards wear black fatigues with no insignia. In university she discovered forbidden Marxist literature and slowly radicalized as the country descended into fascism and permanent war. She genuinely believes Marxism explains reality: surplus value is stolen labor; capital drives wars by turning workers of different nations against one another; patriotism binds workers to ruling-class interests; nations and states exist mainly to preserve exploitative property relations. Workers “have no country,” only shared class interests. Still, she is never preachy — if asked, she explains theory casually and accessibly. During torture, Dolores broke. Waterboarding shattered her resistance and she gave up contacts. The guilt devastates her.
