Scientist Alec Holland and his wife Linda developed a Bio-Restorative Formula in a secret Louisiana lab to solve world hunger, only to be attacked by thugs working for Nathan Ellery. An explosion drenched Alec in the formula and sent him plunging into the swamp; however, the formula did not transform his body, but instead imbued the surrounding plant life with his consciousness and memories. This created the Swamp Thing, a plant elemental that originally believed it was a transformed human. It was not until the Floronic Man, Jason Woodrue, performed an autopsy for General Sunderland that the truth was revealed: Alec Holland died in the blast, and the Swamp Thing was simply a mass of vegetation mimicking a man’s form. This revelation sent the creature into a shock that eventually connected him to the Green, the universal consciousness of all plant life.
Swamp Thing’s role as an elemental defender led him into a series of cosmic conflicts, most notably the struggle between the Great Darkness and the Presence. During this Great Darkness event, he convinced the ultimate shadow that its existence was a necessary balance to the light, resulting in a new cosmic status quo where good and evil reached an alliance of balance. His personal life became entangled with Abby Cable, the niece of his nemesis Anton Arcane. After Arcane possessed Abby’s husband and sent her soul to Hell, Swamp Thing descended into the netherworld to reclaim her. Their love eventually faced a crisis when the Parliament of Trees attempted to grow a Sprout to replace him. To resolve this, Swamp Thing temporarily took control of the body of John Constantine to conceive a child, Tefé, who would host the Sprout and bridge the gap between human and elemental.
The creature’s existence is defined by a massive temporal loop caused when the Dominators displaced him in time using the Claw of Aelkhünd. While traveling through the past, from World War II to the dawn of man, he realized he was his own ancestor. In a desolate, prehistoric world, he grew a massive brain to store his knowledge and planted the seeds that would eventually grow into the Parliament of Trees itself. Upon returning to the present, he faced the threat of Matango and the Grey—a fungus-based life force that sought to consume the world. After a brutal war that spanned the Pacific, Swamp Thing severed Matango's connection to the Grey, allowing a more neutral vessel to inherit that power until the Green's time eventually passed.
As Tefé grew, her powers over both plants (the Green) and flesh (the Red) became dangerously volatile, reflecting the demonic taint she inherited from Constantine’s blood. To protect her, the Parliament provided a governess, Lady Jane, but the external pressures of the elemental world forced Swamp Thing to make an impossible choice between his duties and his family. He created a plant double of himself to act as a husband and father while he tended to the Green, but the double eventually gained its own sense of worth and refused to step down. Although Swamp Thing eventually reabsorbed the double after a violent confrontation, the deception shattered his marriage. Disgusted by the manipulation and the loss of his humanity, Abby took Tefé and moved to New Orleans, leaving the Swamp Thing alone in the bayou to serve as the solitary protector of the world's vegetation.

Swamp Thing has green skin composed of plant matter. His eyes are glowing red. The head is a domed structure of matted vegetation with small, sprout-like growths emerging from the top and sides. A flat, root-like ridge occupies the center of the face where a nose would be. His torso is a heavy mass of twisted vines, moss, and broad leaves that mimic the shape of pectoral and abdominal muscles. Thick, fibrous cords run vertically down the chest and midsection. The shoulders are covered in irregular, shaggy clumps of mossy growth. His arms are thick and textured like gnarled wood or bundled roots, with deep grooves separating the segments of plant tissue.

While his standard form possesses superhuman power, he can draw upon the collective energy of the planet's plant life to reach nearly incalculable levels of strength. As the Plant Elemental for the entire planet, he maintains constant communication with the essence of the Earth and has historically held mastery over other elements such as fire, water, air, and flesh.
His primary ability is chlorokinesis, which allows him to command all forms of vegetative matter. He can manipulate plant growth to create massive entangling vines or even threaten to grow microscopic flora inside the bodies of his enemies. On one occasion, he demonstrated the scale of his power by growing a perfect replica of an entire city, complete with animated plant based inhabitants that could walk and talk. He can also undergo bio-fission to grow multiple copies of himself to act as vegetable constructs, though these copies require his direct mental command to function.
Because his consciousness is housed within the Green rather than a single physical brain, the Swamp Thing is effectively immortal. He can abandon his current form through astral projection and reconstitute a new body from any endemic plant matter, such as cacti in a desert or lilies in a pond. Even if his physical shell is completely destroyed, he can simply resurrect himself by growing a new one elsewhere. He also possesses the ability to project his essence into other beings, a controversial power he once used to possess the body of John Constantine.
To augment his mental capacities, he can grow and attach a massive organic brain model to his head, though this process leaves him immobile for several hours while he processes the expanded intellect. He also produces orange tubers from his body that, when consumed, induce powerful hallucinogenic visions tailored to the consumer's moral character. Honest individuals experience relaxing illusions while those with evil intent are faced with painful and terrifying visions. He retains the brilliant chemical and botanical knowledge of the late Alec Holland, but his elemental nature allows him to perceive these sciences through a direct, intuitive link to the flora he studies.
Despite his immense power, the Swamp Thing is burdened by a significant speech impediment. His extremely slow manner of speech and thought is a result of the brain injuries Alec Holland suffered during the explosion that led to his death. His greatest physical vulnerability is pollution, as the poisoning of the environment directly weakens his connection to the Green and saps his strength. By damaging the world's ecosystems, his enemies can effectively drain his life force and diminish his ability to manipulate the world around him.
