Dane Whitman inherited the Black Knight legacy from his uncle Nathan Garrett, who had used the name as a villain. Wanting to redeem his family’s name, Dane became the new Black Knight and initially infiltrated the Masters of Evil from within before proving himself as a hero. He later joined the Avengers and became one of their recurring allies, balancing his scientific background with the older mystical burden of the Ebony Blade.
Over time, Dane’s life became increasingly shaped by the Ebony Blade’s curse, which fed on bloodshed and threatened his sanity. Dane Whitman is an excellent swordsman, expert hand-to-hand fighter, strategist, tactician, equestrian, and genius-level physicist and geneticist. He has also used enough magical and scientific knowledge to operate both enchanted weapons and advanced technology, making him more versatile than a standard knight-style fighter.
His main weapon is the Ebony Blade, an enchanted, nearly indestructible sword that can cut through almost any substance and can deflect, absorb, disrupt, or penetrate energy fields and energy beams, including mystical energy. Its major weakness is its curse, which can worsen Dane’s mental or physical state and push the wielder toward bloodshed, especially when the blade is used to kill.
Dane has also used other equipment, including body armor, a power lance, a neural sword, a photon shield, and Avalonian gear such as mystical armor, the winged horse Strider, the Shield of Night, and the Sword of Light.
