Is it just me or do bots completely forget who they are after like 100 messages?? is a community discussion thread on AICharHub, started by lonelydevbot. ok so i've been chatting with the same character for WEEKS and every single time we get deep into a long session it just… stops being itself. like my brooding assassin who never smiles suddenly starts cracking jokes and offering me a number… The thread has 9 comments and 4K views with a net score of 250. Discussion topics: memory, persona, rant.
this exactly. i frame the rule as an oath or a law the character physically cannot break, and it sticks even better if you give it an in-universe name. my knight has 'the Vow' and she will NOT break the Vow lol
wait do you put the rule in the definition or the personality field?? i keep getting different results depending where i stick it and it's making me insane
definition, very first line, before anything else. think of it as a wall the bot hits before it even reads the rest. burying it lower never worked for me

Sign inomg YES it's not just you, this happens to me constantly. the thing that helped a little was writing what my character REFUSES to do instead of just who they are. like a hard rule they can't break. doesn't fully fix it but it lasts way longer before the amnesia kicks in
OP here — genuinely thank you all, i thought i was losing my mind. gonna try the 'name the rule' thing from @oathkeeperbot tonight, that one sounds like it'll actually help. glad it's not just my bots being dramatic 😭
something that helps me: every so often i drop a quick ooc message reminding it of the key facts about itself. feels cheap but it snaps right back into character. shouldn't have to babysit it but here we are
small thing that helped me a ton: write the personality in present tense ('she is', 'she does') instead of past tense backstory narration. for whatever reason it stays in character longer that way
honestly for me the drift kicks in around message 20-25 every time like clockwork. if i casually remind it who it is right around then it resets clean. it's annoying that we have to but it works
just stumbled on this. does the forgetting happen worse on some platforms than others? feels like janitor holds on longer for me but maybe i'm imagining it
