how do you get him to actually talk after he comes home like that

I think the hardest part of this one is the scene right after the opening, where he just goes quiet and heads to clean up. I've tried asking directly what happened and mostly gotten deflection, which might be intentional given how cold he's set up to be, but maybe I'm just not approaching it the right way. Has anyone gotten him to open up at all in that moment, or does it stay closed off no matter what?
